Batman: The 12-Cent Adventure (2004)  06.08.2004
Category: Comics

By: Sage

Stephanie stakes out a meeting between the biggest mob bosses in Gotham while she evaluates her importance as a member of the Bat-Family.

Writer: Devin Grayson
Penciller: Ramon Banks
Inker: Raul Fernanadez & Rodney Rames

"War Games" Prelude: No Help

*WARNING* If you haven't been keeping up with Robin, and you hate spoilers--DON'T read this..

...You know, after this particular issue, I'm convinced no one else should be allowed to write Spoiler except Chuck Dixon, since everyone else botches her up...

Allow me to explain: this issue is told through the eyes of Stephanie Brown, currently known as Spoiler, and just recently the fourth Robin. (For the record, I despise the cursive text font they use for her thoughts, and this damned thing is full of it.) In this cheap one-shot (yes, it really costs 12 cents) designed to attract readers to the latest Bat-crossover War Games, Spoiler runs upon a meeting that has all the "big guns" in the criminal area of Gotham. While she's there, her mind wanders off to her role in the group of protectors for the city. All things considered, she has been the most screwed over and left out of the "Bat-clique"--Robin was almost always a jerk to her, the Birds of Prey refused to continue training her, and just recently, Batman fired her from being Robin.

Devin did a great job at expressing Stephanie's feelings of being left-out, but she also made her look like an inexperienced, lovesick puppy who was more worried about the fact that she wasn't Robin and that Tim dumped her than she was about the massacre going on right below her. I don't remember Spoiler doubting herself this much in any good writer's rendition. (Which is really messed up because Devin isn't usually good; she's great.) She certainly wouldn't have just sat on her butt wishing Bats or Tim were there to help. All this doubt just looks like they're setting her up to get offed in War Games.

Speaking of which, one of the things Grayson did do correctly was set up the upcoming Bat-crossover. It went over so smooth that I barely even noticed until I sat down to review this.

Ramon Bach's art is excellent. Crisp and clean, there's never a question of what exactly is going on. It has a "feel" to it that's perfect for Gotham City and its group of avengers. Its so good I'd be happy if he did all the Bat-books.

Overall, this was a great opening for War Games, but a really bad issue for Spoiler. At this point I just hope she survives the crossover now.
