| | | Alado Sincera - Ven 08.02.2006 Category: Music | Spanish Alternative Rock Cover of "Ven"
Alado Sincera
Normally I wouldn't recommend spanish music here, since I'm not so fond of the arabic half-tones which influence many of the songs on that market. However, Barcelona-based newcomer group ALADO SINCERA is much closer to indie pop-rock and the 2 songs from their debut album I caught on the radio convinced me instantly (you can listen to them yourself clicking the links below this article) that I wanted to check out their whole album. They are featured "Fnac talent" in Jan./Feb. 2006, a special promotion for young groups by Spain's (and I think also France's) biggest disc seller. Alas, the album "Ven" (Come) is a mixed bag. The tone of all songs is contemplative and maybe even melancholic, but that is almost to be expected from this kind of music. The arrangements of 2 electric guitars, bass, drums and the occasional violin are mostly slow, the medium paced opener "Secuelas y beneficios" (Aftermaths and benefits) is as heavy as it gets (which is not very). The good: The guitars and general arrangement have an almost hypnotic quality. Phrases are repeated in an almost chant-like fashion and where it works, it works beautifully. The highlights of the album are the tracks "Sequelas and beneficios" and "Decides tú" (You decide), and this is mostly because of the wah-wah guitar, which on "Decides tú" takes on an almost psychedelic quality, while on "Sequelas and Beneficios" it is virtually singing a solo. The bad: Singing is not the strong point of this group, Daniel Ardura's voice sounds definitely untrained and frequently changes to falsetto tones and I have the impression that he doesn't always hit the mark. He also seems to be quickly out of breath, however, that may all be part of his style, I have heard stranger things. The above-mentioned hypnotic quality ventures into the monotonous on 1 or 2 tracks which I prefer to skip when listening to the whole album. Overall a good first effort and I will be sure to listen to my favorite 2 tracks a lot and some other 3 or 4 nice tracks as well. Don't be put off by the fact that you don't understand spanish, the music is not too heavy on words and you can always run them by Google.
